Everyone Struggling With Opioid Addiction Requires Some Form of Professional Rehab

According to the most recent data by the Government, at least 3.7 million Canadians aged at least 15 years old used an opioid medication in 2018. Health Canada estimates that in Ontario alone, there are over nine million opioid prescriptions written for treatments of various forms of pain. Out of these one in 10 reported abusing such medications. It goes without saying that the situation has reached a critical point and many people find themselves helpless in the face of a devastating epidemic.

Equally, it is not always obvious what the best course of treatment is, and the confusion is costing lives. In an effort to clear some of the fog around this and provide support, a rehab centre in Toronto has committed to explaining the options, what the differences between them are and when one is more recommended over the other.

Understanding Suboxone treatment

Although many are reticent to believe, opioid assisted therapy has been shown to be clinically meaningful in supressing the effects of nonmedical opioid use. Suboxone specifically is a medication that combines Naloxone and Buprenorphine, both of which having been proven to be in effective in blocking any euphoria effects that those who abuse opioids are seeking.

According to a study conducted by Yale University, people recovering from opioid addictions with Suboxone have been shown to be substantially more likely to stick with the treatment six monthsdown the line than those who detoxed solely through abstinence.

Understanding when an intervention is needed

Family members and loved ones are a vital link in the recovery process and in providing the necessary information to health professionals who can help. While the media and what has been portrayed in films and books has definitely played in role in putting the wrong idea in people’s heads about the potential of an intervention, many studies are pointing to the contrary. When led by a competent professional team with extensive experience in the area and benefits from the support of the family, an intervention can be a highly effective option for those who are reluctant to seek help.

“Despite recent media attention, the opioid epidemic remains serious and life-threatening for many Canadians. If we think that between January 2016 and September 2018, over 10,300 lost their lives because of an opioid overdose, it’s hard to believe an effective solution has been implemented. What many fail to understand is that addiction is not only multifaceted, but it requires an individualized approach. No two cases will be exactly the same,” said an Addiction Rehab Toronto representative.
