You have heard the horror stories of Passover programs being cancelled in the months or even weeks before Passover. There are stories of people showing up at hotels and being asked for more money because the organizers haven’t paid the vendors, or the program has been cancelled altogether. People are left scrambling for food and accommodations right before the holiday. Whether it is your first time or your tenth time choosing a Passover program, follow these tips to find the right program for you:

1. Always ask for references! Ask the program operators to provide you with references from previous guests. Reputable programs will have no problem connecting you with previous guests (with their permission of course) who can vouch for their experience. If this is a new program, then ask the operator if they have been involved with any previous programs or caterers. Previous guests are the BEST way for you to review a Passover program.

2. If the program is in a foreign country, then ask if there will be activities such as kids clubs, shiurim, entertainment and the like in your language. If the program is mainly Sephardi, ask if there will be an Ashkenazi minyan and vice versa. Also ascertain the situation regarding kitniot.

3. Check the kashrut certification. Ask the program operator about the hashgacha and get contact details of the supervising body and contact them directly. They will be more than happy to explain the level of Kashrut.

4. What is important to you? The programs are not “one size fits all”. Think about what you want out of the program: sightseeing, spending time at the resort, children’s programs, lectures and shiurim or the quality of food. Figure out what is important to you and choose accordingly.

5. Research the quality of the hotel. Check the internet for pictures and reviews of the facility to get a better idea of the rooms, amenities, pools and communal areas.

6. Protect yourself by paying with a credit card, if possible. This will give you some protection in the rare case that the program fails or cancels. Always buy travel insurance as soon as you book your tickets, so you are covered by that as well.

Remember that most Passover hotels and resorts are of good quality, run by decent people and companies.  There will always be a few that fall short of the honest and decent standards that everyone expects. Follow these tips to avoid a Passover disaster and find the best program for you and your family.
